PARKS + OPEN SPACE
LOCATION Marrakesh, Morocco CLIENT Chwitter University
The Foundation Alliances for Sustainable Development launched an international competition for the design of a sustainable design education center in Marrakesh, Morocco. The competition was organized under the auspices of the International Union of Architects. Sixty-three teams from seventeen countries answered the international call for candidates. Bureau E.A.S.T. teamed with Fletcher Studio and was one of six selected to compete for the commission. The proposed campus is a working campus for experimentation in sustainable building materials and site design for arid environments. The site plan includes an entry courtyard and meandering walks through spaces and sub-spaces that serve to extend classroom space into the outdoors. A main quad provides retractable cover for outdoor classrooms, testing and work spaces, and assembly. The roofs of the also include an intricate circulation system that connects a variety of social spaces, roof gardens, and agricultural areas. Excess water from the building is stored in cisterns to serve irrigation needs. There is a vertical green wall that is connected to the cooling system for specific buildings.
